The Solar Powered Day For Night Dress
Written by Erik on October 4, 2006 – 1:08 am -
It’s the fashionable solar powered Day For Night dress! It’s made out of interconnected white circuit boards and RGB LEDs, plus its powered by the sun! Here is a closeup view of each of the tiles…

It looks a bit… scratchy. Anywho, the cool thing is you can program it to display different colors and symbols and anything else you can think of.

Oh No No No I’m A Roller Man
Written by Erik on September 28, 2006 – 2:35 pm -
Now this would be entertaining…
I wonder what the lights above his elbows are for though. Plus if you get bored rolling on your stomach you can roll over on your back!
Theoretically you can find out more on his site, Buggy Rollin, but the site design is an excellent example of why you don’t create your entire website in Flash.

A Camera Made Of Wood
Written by Erik on September 25, 2006 – 5:00 pm -
It’s a camera with a crunchy wooden shell and a gooey digital filling! I like the unique look, though I wish the camera looked less like a planchette. Either way it’d be pretty cool to see a larger SLR camera with a wood shell. I wonder how much more this weighs with the wood.
Anywho, Olympus just announced the camera today and they’re tightlipped about a release date.

The Leica D-Lux 3 Is Spiffy
Written by Erik on September 15, 2006 – 2:01 pm -
The Leica D-Lux 3 has a 28-112 F2.8 Lens on it. It has a nice figure at 4.2 x 2.3 x 1.0 in, with a weight of 7.8 ounces with the li-ion battery.
Personally I love the classic look.. Plus you can operate the shutter speed and every other setting manually. You can also shoot in either JPEG or RAW. If it had an actual viewfinder this thing would be perfect.
No price or release date but it will probably be in the 700 dollar range.
Full specs and info at Leica USA.

The Yahoo Search Engine Is Weird
Written by Erik on August 26, 2006 – 11:30 pm -I am now the top ranked search for Erik Persson on the Yahoo search directory. The only problem is that the top link goes to the Genealogy page family.erikpersson.com. For some reason, which is completely logical to the Yahoo bots, erikpersson.com is still ranked 15th. To add to the amusement, my Flickr account is ranked 13th.
All this data leads me to believe that Search Engine Optimization is just voodoo and random guessing.
Either way this means I’ve managed to place my name at the top of a popular search engine! This calls for revelry and non-alcoholic beverages!

Tags, Categories, and Updates, Oh My!
Written by Erik on August 18, 2006 – 7:00 pm -As you can see the The Journal section has been updated.
The biggest update you’ll find, besides the theme change, is the addition of Tags. You can find these at the bottom of each of my posts and on the sidebar on the right. Now the first question is what are tags? They’re another form of categorization. But don’t I have categories to categorize my posts? Yes but some search engines prefer Tags.
So whats the difference between Categories and Tags? Categories work like a folder structure. How do you classify a Dog? First you figure out if its a mammal, then see if it belongs to the order Carnivora, after that you see if it belongs to family Canidae. If thats all true then you check if it belongs to the genus Canus, whereupon we get to the species C. Lupus which then takes us to our old friend Canis lupus familiaris. Whew, that explanation was long winded and obtuse. Basically categories are straight lines. You also see this type of structure with the filing of documents in meatspace and on your computer. C:\Documents and Settings\Erik\My Documents refers to a folder that is located on the C: Drive within that drive you have the sub-category Documents and Settings, within this Folder we have the User profile Erik, and within that we have the folder My Documents.
Tags, or labels if you use a Google product, on the other hand are descriptive. What kind of dog is it? It’s a big furry red dog with a tennis ball in its mouth and muddy paws. Pretty descriptive, no? If somebody told you to look out for that animal you’d be able to spot it rather quickly. Likewise this article falls under the Tags: Announcement Categories Geek Google Internet Life Model Site Spiffy Tags Tech Tips Wordpress Writing
As you can see Tags and Categories have diverse uses in computer technology and in real life. As such both Categorization methods work to make it easier for you to find interesting and meaningful content.
